Basic Earth And Environmental Science

 The Earth has not always been this way. It has taken a great length of time to produce the features that we now observe. In the distant future the Earth will appear different again because changes are continuously taking place. Scientists agree that the Earth formed from a large cloud of gas and dust. As the gases and dust cooled, the Earth developed, slowly forming a ball-shape with a solid surface. This surface is called the crust.

The solid materials of the crust are called ROCKS. The first rocks resulted from the cooling of molten material. These rocks are called ingenous rocks. Granite is one.

Here is a picture of Granite:

A Taste Of Biology

1. Living Things
Biology is the study of living things. Living things are a group of objects which have many common characteristics. All living things have life, which means they can carry out activities and other things. All living things need oxygen to thrive. Living things include plants, fish and us. Living things move, grow, react and reproduce from energy which they can get from food sources around them.

2.Classification Of Living Things
Living things are usually divided into two groups - plants and animals. The differences between plants and animals can be seen in three main areas - their movement, whether they make their own food, and the structure of their cells.

Movement- The movement of most plants is slow. They are fixed in one place by their roots. Plants have a process called 'photosynthesis', which means that they can take in carbon dioxide and release them into the air as oxygen. Animals have specialised parts such as legs, wings, fins, tails and small hairs which are used just for movement. Some move slowly and some can move rapidly.

Cell Structure- All living things are made of tiny cells. Some living things consist of one single cell, while others, such as humans consist of millions. Plant cells are usually box shaped and contain more liquid.

How to treat 'ich' also known as the freshwater whitespot disease

Ichthyophthirius Multifiliis, is a common disease of freshwater fish. It can be fatal if not treated.
'Ich' is a parasite that often appears as White spots on the fins and gills of the fish, roughly the size of a pin head. There is a theory that all fish have it and only become infected when stressed, I do not know if this is true. First, set your aquarium degrees up to a higher temperature as this will speed up the life cycle of the parasite, but only do this if your fish tolerate high water temperatures. Chemical treatments include formalin, malachite green, methylene blue, chelated copper, copper sulfate, potassium permanganate and quinine. You can by a treatment from your local pet store. My fish have just been cured of 'ich', but I did lose a few so  be prepared.

Sharks, the most feared animals?

The truth is, that sharks are not agressive and that they attack humans mostly by mistake as to thinking they're seals or something that they normally eat. Sharks most of the times just take a bite and they'll leave you alone when realising that you're not something that they usually eat. The mistakes that they do is mostly due to poor eyesight. Then again, sharks make up the poor eyesight with an incredible sense of smell.

Cross+Roads= Danger riddle

This is how you work out the answer to the Cross + Roads = Danger riddle.

CROSS
+ ROADS
----------------
DANGER

Well you can see that the DANGER has one more letter than CROSS and ROADS, and the extra letter is D. That means that C + R equals something more than 10. Which also means D is 1. So now we have this equation...

CROSS
+ ROA1S
---------------
1 ANGER

And this key...

C=?
R=?
O=?
S=?
A=?
D=1
E=?
N=?
G=?

Now look at the equation below (same as one just above)

CROSS
+ ROA1S
---------------
1 ANGER

Oh look, S + S = R. That means that R must be even. We have a choice of 4, 6 and 8, because if R was 2, S would have to be 1, and D is already 1. Let's try 6 for the value of R, because we need high numbers if we want C + R to equal something more than 10. Oh look, if R is 6 and S is R divided by 2, then S must be 3!

Now we have this key...

C=?
R=6
O=?
S=3
A=?
D=1
E= ?
N=?
G=?

And this equation...

C6O33
+ 6OA13
---------------
1 ANGE6

Well it's pretty obvious that 3 + 1 = 4, so now we have E down as 4. And since we now only have 4 spots in the key left, we choose the highest number for C, which is 9. Again, we need high numbers to make C + R equal something more than 10.

Now we have this key...

C=9
R=6
O=?
S=3
A=?
D=1
E= 4
N=?
G=?

And this equation...

96O33
+ 6OA13
---------------
1 ANG46

In the equation, O + A = G. We have 2, 5, 7 and 8 vacant. Let's play around with these letters. Let's see if we can find an equation in there. Yes! There is an equation there. 5 + 2 = 7! So G must equal 7. We know that 9 + 6 = 15, but it's missing the 5! So, A must equal 5. In turn, this leads to O having to be 2 (do the maths, O + 5 = 7). And last of all, O is 2, so 6 + 2 (6 + O) = N But 6 + 2 = 8, so now N is 8. We now have the following equation...

96233
62513
------------
158746

And the following key...

C=9
R=6
O=2
S=3
A=5
D=1
E= 4
N=8
G=7

Congratulations, you have now finished the CROSS + ROADS = DANGER puzzle.

The Magical Number 9

1:  Find more than one multiple of 9 such as 9 and 18. (you have to do it in order for it to work)

2: add them.  18
                       9
                   ____+

                      2  7

3. 27 is your answer. add 2 and 7 to make 9! you can do it with as many multiples of nine as you want and it will still be the same! (remember you have to do it in order!)

Daily Fact #5

Hi Guys, this is my final daily post, from now on, I'll be doing them monthly as I haven't got the time.

Did You Know that a shark can never lose all it's teeth. If one falls off, a tooth from another row will fill it's place.

Daily Fact #4

Plants can grow without soil. The only things that they need is oxygen and water.

Theory on why the sky is Blue

Well, I have a theory which could result as an answer to as why the sky is Blue. What I think is that the sky is Blue because the Earths water, reflects of the light given by the sun, which would also explain why the sky is Black at night since there is no sun. There is an experiment that you can try to prove this too. If you put a brightly colored tooth brush or some other brightly colored object into a cup which in the inside is White, and    pour some water in, the water will turn what ever the color of the object that you put in. It has the same principle as to why the sky is Blue but only on a smaller scale.

If you have your own theories on why the sky is Blue, feel free to post it in the comments.

Sharks

Sharks are fierce predators, they have dorsal fins and about 200 rows of teeth. They loose about 500 teeth a year! They grow new teeth When the old teeth come out. They can also smell blood from a mile away. Sharks favourite food are: small fish, cods, Octopuses and if they're really hungry, they'll even eat other sharks! The biggest shark in the world is the Great White Shark. It can grow up to 15 metres long! The biggest shark that ever lived is the Megalodon shark it grows up to 27 metres long, and a tooth from this shark is about the size of your hand! If you ever come face to face with one, you should always: keep calm (sharks can sense fear), try kicking and punching too( a sharks weak spots are its gills and its eyes). Most sharks live in almost all oceans and seas.

Daily Fact #3

A male sheep is called a 'RAM', funny but true.

Basketball

Basketball, a widely known game consisting of ball handling skills and superior hand eye coordination, first originated in the U.S. What was first a backyard sport, is now a popular game played around the world. There are some basketball leagues, one of the most widely known is the 'NBA' (National Basketball Association).

There are 5 people in each team that are on court at once. The players usually wear singlets and shorts to their games with their team name on the front and their number on the back, while their team colour is on both sides.

In basketball, you cannot step more than twice without bouncing the ball. In basketball, when you bounce the ball its called a dribble. If you do step more than twice without 'dribbling', it will be called a 'travel'. If you get a travel, it will be the oppositions ball, which they can throw in from the side of the court. Another rule is that if you stop dribbling and start dribbling again or if you dribble with two hands, it will be a double dribble, which also means the opponents possession. Another important rule is you cannot deliberately push or do any harm to other players. It will be a foul which also means the opponents possession. On the other hand, a shooting foul is when you try to take a shot, but the opponent either hits your hand or do anything to make you mess up the shot. It is then 2 free shots for the person who was trying to shoot.

Some of the most frequently used shots in Basketball, are the 'lay-up' and the 'jump shot'. The jump shot is the most easiest and simplest of shots, but you do need to get open in order to take the shot more accurately as defenders can block you. The jump shot is just taking a shot while jumping. The layup, is more frequently used as you don't need to get open as much. The layup is also another simple but effective type of shot. The classic layup, is where you run just underneath the basket, but not too under and take 2 steps then take the shot. You can also put the ball around your body or underneath your legs to make it harder for the defender to block your shot.

Now that you've learnt the rules, why don't you play some basketball?

Daily Fact #2

Trees and plants have a process called photosynthesis, which means that it takes in carbon dioxide (Co2) and release it back into the air as oxygen.

Daily Fact #1

Did you know that if you put a spoon in a tub of water, it will look as if it's bent/discontinuous, if you take it out again, it will go back to normal.
